Memories Give Direction

As a young boy at the age of 12, Johnnie acquired a few heifers.  A neighbors bull jumped the fence and bred one of the heifers.  Johnnie still remembers vividly the day that calf was born.

"Grandma came into the kitchen, she said, 'Johnnie, grab a tow sack, your heifer is down by the creek trying to have her calf.'  We walked down to the creek and I had to pull that calf.  I hated doing that.  Didn't want to ever do that again."

That day left a lasting impression.  Johnnie says, "If I had to pull a calf, the cow and calf got sold, I didn't even want them on my place.  If I had to pull more than one, the bull was gone."  Johnnie spent years looking for characteristics that he could see that would best promote calving ease. 

 

When DNA testing surfaced, he watched and learned about the things you can't see from the outside.  Years before Certified Angus Beef came on the market he saw carcass quality traits like marbling being influential in the years to come.  30 years ago he was telling his friends, "You need to buy bulls with all the marbling you can afford to buy."  The combination of experience and willingness to learn now brings to the table a top quality herd with a reputation for calving ease, good carcass value and overall good quality angus cattle.
